The Domaine Porte Rouge was created in 2003 by Bernard Friedmann, for he passion for wine. Originally, there was nothing, they had to acquire a few old vine parcels in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 6 in total, accounting for 6.2 acres. Then they layed out an old wine cellar which is located at the core of the town of Châteauneuf.

The "Porte Rouge" ("Red Door"), was the "orouse" door, the wind in provençal : the "wind door", the door of the Mistral, at the North of the town. Frosty in winter, and bliss in the summer, when the wind isn't blowing too strongly ! This Mistral that makes it rain or shine on our vines, that breaks everything, but chases the rain away and removes mildew. We owe our gratitude for some beautiful harvests we get.

Porte Rouge is a small winery of 6.2 acres of old grenache vines that grow under full sun, surrounded by big pebbles rolled down by the Rhône river. There are six parcels in total, each with their own character and receving specific care. It's also a small production of 8000 to 10000 bottles, according to years.

The vineyard located in the town is very old and used to be a silk factory. Then, a cooperage settled in until 1907, and the old vaulted wine-cellar dug in the rock under the construction became again Châteauneuf's wine storage facility.

Everything is carried out to produce wines in the most ancient traditions. The innovative idea is to do "like in the past" : ecological vine work with plowing, vintage in baskets, crapefruit care and wine making.

Afterwards, nothing can replace the value of time during the slow and complex evolution of wine. If some deposit appear, it is the testimony of a breeding as natural and as healthy as possible. In here, no fining and no filtration !

Our wine is powerful thanks to the proper care we gave it. So do the same at home, keep it carefully in your temperate cellar, protected from light. Take some time to taste it at a cool temperature - between 15°C (59°F) and 18°C (64.4°F) - for your pleasure... and your friends'.
